Marijuana for Bone Healing
Marijuana for Bone Healing
Did you know marijuana can help heal bones? According to researchers, cannabidiol is a nonpsychotropic marijuana component that boosts the healing process.
Researchers from the Hebrew University and Tel Aviv University (TAU) in Israel discovered that bone formation is invigorated as the cannabinoid receptors in the body are stimulated by the cannabis compound. The treatment is also revealed to inhibit bone loss as well as prevent diseases like osteoporosis.
“The clinical potential of cannabinoid-related compounds is simply undeniable at this point,” study author Dr. Yankel Gabet asserted. He works at the Department of Anatomy and Anthropology at TAU’s Sackler Faculty of Medicine.
For this study, Dr. Gabet and his colleagues monitored the effects of cannabidiol on rats. After 8 weeks of observation, they discovered the impressive bone healing process.
“We found that CBD alone makes bones stronger during healing, enhancing the maturation of the collagenous matrix, which provides the basis for new mineralization of bone tissue,” Dr. Gabet reported. “After being treated with CBD, the healed bone will be harder to break in the future.”
Pointing out the significance of these findings, Dr. Gabet stressed that researchers should pursue “this line of study in clinical trials to assess its usefulness in improving human fracture healing.”
Dr. Gabet, however, admitted that “there is still a lot of work to be done to develop appropriate therapies” using cannabidiol.
